What do Lions Do?

Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their local and world communities. By conducting service projects and raising funds, Lions strive to help those in need, wherever need exists.

The Lions motto is: “We Serve.” It is not only our motto, but also a definition and philosophy.

In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions at their International Convention, challenging them to become the “Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness". Since that time service to the blind and visually impaired has become one of the Lions’ Clubs most significant activities. Last year the Lions of Massachusetts donated over $1,000,000 to Mass Lions Eye Research.

In addition, Lions participate in service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and eye research, community welfare, and work with both the physically and mentally impaired.

The association was founded in Chicago in 1917 and has grown to be the world’s largest service organization with over 1.4 million members in 180 countries.
